Plan and implement press strategies for CTI, a national non-profit organization.  Maintain press contacts, write press releases, obtain positive press coverage for events, edit on-line newsletter and maintain contact with present and potential community partners.

 

Co-founder and President  -  Mocha Moms, Inc.  -  1997 – 2002.

      This support group started as a newsletter for at-home mothers of color, and now has

      more than 100 chapters across the country.  Created the framework for the organization, handled all press and public relations, edited the newsletter, and partnered with Arnold & Porter to obtain 501 (c) 3 status.  Conducted interviews for the group for media such as The Washington Post newspaper, Ebony, Essence, and Jet magazines, the “Tavis Smiley Show,” and the “KoJo Nnamdi Show” (NPR).

 

Freelance Writer  -  1989 – present.

      Specialize in issues relating to parenting.  Articles have appeared in The Washington Post newspaper, Parenting Magazine, and the Prince George’s Journal newspaper.

 

Press Secretary for Congressman Ben Cardin  -  1988 – 1989.

      Handled all national press contacts for the congressman, and originated and produced a cable television program, “Cardin on Congress,” that still airs today.  In addition to press duties, was responsible for three issues for the office:  South Africa, animal rights, and Operation Understanding.  Operation Understanding was a joint project with Congressman Kweisi Mfume that sent 6 African-American and 6 Jewish high school juniors on a month-long tour of Senegal and Israel.  Remained as director of the program until the fall of 1990.

 

Writer/Producer, WMAR-TV  -  1984-1988.

      Produced many special programs, public service announcements, and the weekly program, “Next Question,” hosted by sports agent Ron Shapiro.  Booked a wide range of guests on the program, including Oprah Winfrey, Bryant Gumbel, and Peter Ueberroth.

 

Co-Host  -  “Say Baltimore”  -  WMAR-TV and WNUV-TV  -  1983-1984.

      Interviewed guests for this live public affairs program.
